Neural networks and their use in handwriting recognition

Project No. 5003-034449
Subject Neural networks and their use in handwriting recognition
Author Fritz Eggimann, Prof. Dr.
Institut für Signal- und Informationsverarbeitung, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology at Zurich (ETH)

Start 1.1.93
End 31.12.95
Contents Acquisition of new theoretical and application-oriented knowledge for the use of neural networks in handwriting recognition. Initial experience shows the usefulness of neural networks as classifiers. However, most systems are based on recognizing individual presegmented letters, which gives unsatisfactory results for running script. What is wanted is therefore algorithms capable of providing recognition on the word level and of incorporating environmental information as part of the recognition process. Network behaviour is simulated on classical computers.
Co-operation with AT&T Bell Laboratories
