Swiss Priority Programme
Informatics Research 1992 - 1996

At the beginning of 1991 the two legislative chambers of the Swiss Confederation decided on measures for the promotion of scientific research during the period 1992 to 1995. A new element in this decision was the creation of the six priority programmes.
The Priority Programme Informatics Research (SPP IF, 1992-1996) is one of these and is sponsored by the Swiss National Science Foundation.
The programme was designed to make a significant contribution in terms of basic research and in concepts oriented towards the application of information technology. Helping start-up companies to establish themselves in the marketplace was also considered a desirable goal.
Thirty-four projects were started at the beginning of 1993 (series 1), of which 27 were extended to the end of 1995. In the spring of 1994, a second series of 14 projects was decided upon.

Information on SPP IF reflects the state of 1996 and is not being updated.

List of Projects
Three modules of the SPP IF were defined:
Module 1: Secure Distributed Systems
Module 2: Knowledge Based Systems
Module 3: Massively Parallel Systems
Addresses

In Spring 1995 the two Legislative Chambers of the Swiss Confederation decided on measures for the promotion of scientific research during the period 1996 to 1999. Instead of a mere continuation of the Informatics programme, a new Swiss Priority Programme for Information and Communications Structures (SPP ICS, 1996-1999) was brought into being.
The main objectives are the design, development, implementation and trialling of distributed applicatios and the associated networks. The programme includes four modules (engineering of distributed applications and networks, quality and security aspects, management of distributed systems, demonstrators).
